Green Schools Programme

There are now 88 North Tipperary schools participating in the Green Schools, 60 of which have Green Flags. Green Schools is about whole-school action for the environment, with the main focus in the initial phase being on litter and waste. Research has shown that active green schools have reduced waste by over a half. Schools follow a seven step programme in order to attain their Green Flag, which is in effect an environmental management system for their school.

North Tipperary County Council supports all participating Green Schools by providing them with free compost bins and clean up materials. The Council’s Environmental Awareness Officer liaises with schools on an on-going basis, gives talks to students and assists them in getting the Green Schools programme started. Tidy Schools Competition

North Tipperary County Council runs a Tidy Schools competition annually which complements the overall Tiobraid Alainn competition for towns and villages which takes place throughout the county each April. The Council initiated these competitions in order to create support for measures that tackle litter prevention, control and awareness at all levels of the community and also to show that our younger generations are playing their part in keeping our county clean and green.

The Tidy Schools Competition encourages both Primary and Secondary Schools in North Tipperary to battle for the title of Tidiest School in North Tipperary. The main emphasis of the competition is on litter awareness, waste management and on appreciation of our general environment.

Schools are judged according to the following criteria: Litter and Waste Management, Appearance of School Grounds and Approaches, Environmental Awareness Efforts and Presentation of Buildings.

Application forms for Tidy Schools Competition 2012 will be sent to all Secondary and Primary Schools in North Tipperary in March 2012.
