Water Framework Directive

WATERFRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE (2000/60/EC)

The waterframework Directive (WFD) is the most significant piece of water related legislation to date. It adopts a holistic approach covering all waters – rivers, lakes, estuaries, costal water and ground water as well as their dependent wetlands. It also recognises that waters do not stop at administrative boundaries but are required to be managed on a catchment basis.

The WFD sets ambitions targets and requires all waters to achieve ‘good status’ or near pristine conditions by 2015. Eight River Basin Districts has been established within the Island of Ireland and each RBD must prepare a management plan to achieve good water status by 2015 within the District. North Tipperary is covered by two RBD’s. The South East River Basin District (SERBD) covering the Suir, Nore and tributaries and the Shannon RBD (SRBD) taken in Lough Derg and the Rivers and tributaries in the catchments. A large number of organisations from a broad range of disciplines contribute to the activities and the Projects by participating in the River Basin Management Groups. Advisory Councils were established for each RBD in late 2005 and membership of the Advisory Councils include persons appointed by the relevant local authorities in each river basin district and co-opted members who have knowledge, qualification or experience of relevance to the RBD.
